HOUSTON — A 17-year-old high school student became the second suspect charged in the death of a Houston taco truck owner who was killed in October during a robbery attempt.
According to court documents, Dominic Griffin stole and drove the getaway car while Jimmie Daniels, 21, went to rob Roberto Almaguer Garza, 29, as he was closing up his business for the night. Daniels was already in custody before being charged with capital murder. Griffin has also been charged with capital murder.
Both are being held without bond.
What happened
On Oct. 13 at about 3:50 a.m., Almaguer Garza and two of his workers were about to close up for the night when Daniels walked up and tried to rob them at gunpoint, police said. Daniels made his way inside the food truck and a fight broke out and spilled into the parking lot, according to police.
Almaguer Garza was shot multiple times during the fight. The two other workers were not seriously hurt.
Police said after the shooting, Daniels took off, but he was later arrested for unrelated felonies.
Who was Roberto Almaguer
Friends said Almaguer Garza had hoped to make enough money so he and his family could move back to Monterrey. He had almost reached the goal and he was going back in December.
Almaguer Garza leaves behind a wife and three kids, all under the age of 4.
