HOUSTON — A softball coach was gunned down outside his home on Easter Sunday. Now over two months later, Houston police have arrested and charged a 15-year-old with capital murder in connection with his death.
Ivan Ramirez, a 42-year-old father, was a softball coach in southeast Houston for many years. His life was cut short on Easter Sunday after he received a notification that his truck door was opened.
RELATED: His dad was shot and killed. Now, this Houston high schooler is carrying on his father's legacy.
He walked outside of his apartment and was shot. Son Manny Ramirez and his mother found Ivan gunned down on the floor.
"It was definitely traumatizing. It will be the worst day of my life," said Manny Ramirez.
The suspects didn’t take anything from the truck. Instead, they took Ivan from his family. Ivan later died at the hospital.
"A big ball of energy everyone loved him and loved being around him," said Manny.
For weeks, the Ramirez family worried because their loved one's killer was on the loose. Now, HPD has made an arrest.
"A sigh of relief. I kind of go outside every day. I just think about it. If this person was still out there," said Manny.
A teenage boy is now facing capital murder charges, which is something that 17-year-old Manny and his family still are shocked to hear.
"I just can't believe someone so young would do such a thing. You should be in school or playing sports. Doing something better with your life than trying to go out and killing people," said Manny.
Now, these teens hope justice is served for their father.
"He ruined his life and took our lives away too. If he spends the rest of his life. We feel locked up too. We don’t have our dad with us. We don’t have our mentor, our coach with us," said Manny.
The siblings now must continue to live their lives without their father.
"I want to carry him with him when I play," said Ivanney Ramirez, Ivan's daughter.
These teens will carry their father’s legacy on and off the field.
"I come out here. I practice every day I coach every day and I go out there I try to be like him. He was the best man I knew. I want to be half the man he was," said Manny.
Manny and his siblings believe other people were involved and hope someone comes forward with additional information.
If you have any information, you are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers or HPD homicide investigators.
HPD said their investigation is ongoing.
