HOUSTON — A suspect is in custody after a 4-hour standoff with SWAT at a north Houston apartment complex.
This scene unfolded at about 3 a.m. in the 600 block of Berry Road.
Houston police said the original call came in as a weapons disturbance. A child reportedly called 911 after a woman and her boyfriend got into a verbal altercation and the boyfriend pointed a gun at the woman's head. It's unknown what relationship the man and woman have with the children.
Police said when officers arrived at the scene it took a while for someone to answer the door but eventually the woman answered. Police said officers noticed a look on her face that something wasn't right so they instructed her to step outside.
The woman signaled that a man was in there and when officers spotted him they quickly removed her and two children from the house, police said.
“It certainly speaks to the seriousness of the scene," said Houston Police Department commander Megan Howard. "The fact that we had children who were so afraid that thankfully they knew the number to call for help was 911 and one of them did take it upon themselves to contact us and request help.”
Officers quickly secured the scene and called a SWAT team to assist with getting the man out of the apartment. Officers later determined the man was wanted for open warrants, including an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge.
Officers spent about 4 hours trying to get the man to come out and eventually he surrendered without incident.
When officers finally made entry inside the home, they says there was evidence he the man was trying to dig a hole into the neighboring unit, possibly to escape.
No one was injured during this SWAT scene. Police said the man was taken into custody for his open warrants and he will likely be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for the SWAT incident
His identity has not been released.
