HOUSTON – Police opened fire on a female suspect driving a stolen car after she fired a gun at officers, according to an HPD spokesman.
The incident started around 10:45 a.m. when police say the 41-year-old suspect was spotted driving a stolen pick-up near downtown. Police say the woman initially stopped her truck but then started to back-up.
"At that point, the female put the vehicle in reverse and rammed a patrol car intentionally," said HPD spokesman Victor Senties.
Police say the suspect took off and kept going until she pulled into a driveway in the 900 block of Woolworth. That's when police say she jumped out waiving a gun.
"She got out of the vehicle and had a weapon in her hand," said Senties. "[She was] pointing it at officers and there's evidence she shot at officers."
One of those officer was rookie policeman Lance Calloway, who had just been sworn in by HPD. It was his first day on the street. He and his partner, returned fire. The suspect wasn't hit and quickly surrendered. The officers were not injured.
Police have not yet released the woman's name but say was wanted out of Galveston on a warrant for child endangerment.
"This is a pretty dangerous individual," said Senties. "Our officers are lucky nobody was injured."
