DEER PARK, Texas — A woman was airlifted by Life Flight after being shot during a disturbance at an apartment early Monday, according to the Deer Park Police Department.
DPPD Lt. Chris Brown said an armed suspect, later identified as Jose Mendoza Sanchez, 28, was also shot by police who responded to the scene. He has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The incident began around 12:45 a.m. when officers responded to a 911 call in which a disturbance could be heard in the background. Police said the line was then disconnected.
The call came from an apartment complex on E. San Augustine Street, just west of Center Street.
When police arrived, they saw a young girl walking out of an apartment, followed by a man with a gun, Brown said. Officers gave the armed man orders to drop his gun, but he refused to comply. He then pointed the gun at the officers.
At that point, one of the officers shot the man twice, Brown said. The suspect was taken to the hospital to be treated for his wounds.
Officers found that a woman inside the apartment had been shot in the abdomen during the initial disturbance, Brown said. She was airlifted to a hospital and underwent surgery.
Police also found a second child inside the apartment. Neither child showed signs of physical injuries.
Investigators said they believe the suspect and victim were in a relationship, possibly married, and that the man is the stepfather of the two children.
Per department policy, the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation which is standard procedure.
