Gunman shot by officers after child comes running out of apartment, Deer Park police say

The child's mother was found shot in the abdomen inside the apartment on San Augustine Street along with another child, police said.

DEER PARK, Texas — A woman was airlifted by Life Flight after being shot during a disturbance at an apartment early Monday, according to the Deer Park Police Department.

DPPD Lt. Chris Brown said an armed suspect was also shot by police who responded to the scene.

The incident began around 12:45 a.m. when officers responded to a 911 call in which a disturbance could be heard in the background. The call came from an apartment complex on E. San Augustine Street, just west of Center Street.

When police arrived, they saw a young girl running out of an apartment, followed by a man with a gun, Brown said. Officers gave the armed man verbal commands, but he refused to comply.

At that point, one of the officers shot the man twice, Brown said. The suspect was taken to the hospital to be treated for his wounds.

Inside the apartment, officers found that a woman had been shot in the abdomen during the initial disturbance, Brown said. She was airlifted to a hospital and underwent surgery.

Police also found a second child inside the apartment. Neither child showed signs of injury.

Investigators said they believe the suspect and victim were in a relationship, possibly married, and that the man is the stepfather of the two children.

Per department policy, the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.
