2 suspects arrested after ‘cat and mouse’ search following Houston home invasion, police say

After almost six hours, one of the gunmen finally surrendered at 12:30 a.m. and was arrested by SWAT officers, police said.

HOUSTON — A search for two gunmen wanted in a home invasion turned into a “cat and mouse game” as Houston police tried to catch them on the south side Monday night.

This started when officers responded just after 6:30 p.m. to a call of a home invasion on Reed Road, just west of Highway 288.

What we know

  • Officers spotted the gunmen firing shots at the victim on Reed Road.
  • The gunmen ran into nearby woods, prompting police to set up a perimeter.
  • A K-9 unit caught one suspect near the tree line.
  • The second suspect, armed, climbed into a tree and refused to come down.
  • SWAT and hostage negotiators were called in, and after nearly six hours, the suspect surrendered at 12:30 a.m.

Houston police said when officers arrived at the scene, they spotted the gunmen firing shots at the victim. They then ran into the woods nearby.

No injuries were reported in the home invasion.

Police set up a perimeter, and K-9 units and a helicopter were called in to search the area.

One of the suspects was caught by a K-9 unit near the tree line. Police said he was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries and will later be taken to jail.

Police said the second suspect, who was armed when the first suspect was caught, took off running. Once the perimeter was established, the suspect climbed into a tree.

SWAT was called in, along with hostage negotiators, who gave verbal commands for several hours, police said.

After almost six hours, the gunman finally surrendered at 12:30 a.m. and was arrested by SWAT officers, police said. He was evaluated by the Houston Fire Department before being taken to jail to face charges.

No shots were fired during the search, but SWAT officers used flash bangs to help subdue the suspect, police said.
