HOUSTON — An investigation is underway after a man was shot by an officer in downtown Houston late Monday, according to the Houston Police Department.
Currently, police said the man who was shot by an officer is in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
This happened just before 10 p.m. on Capitol Street near Bagby Street.
Houston police said officers responded to a call about a woman refusing to leave the property. When police arrived, they said the woman walked away.
When police located the woman and detained her, they said a man approached them. Officers said they asked the man to show his hands, but he allegedly made sudden movements and didn’t comply.
“The Hispanic male made a sudden movement towards the officer and the officer discharged his weapon more than once striking the suspect,” HPD Assist. Chief Adrian Rodriguez said.
Police said officers attempted to treat the man’s injuries at the scene. The woman was also taken to the hospital for an unrelated medical issue.
Per department policy, the incident will be investigated by HPD’s Internal Affairs Division, the Special Investigations Unit, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
The officer involved in the shooting has just under two years of experience and is assigned to the downtown unit.
Rodriguez said the investigation remains active.
