HOUSTON — A 19-year-old man is in critical condition Tuesday after being shot in northwest Houston, according to police.
It happened just before noon along Bingle Road just north of the Northwest Freeway. Crime scene tape blocked off part of the parking lot for the Family Dollar store.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Initially, Houston police told us that the shooting victim had died. After a family member contacted KHOU 11 News to tell us the victim was still alive, we spoke with Houston police, who confirmed the family was correct.
According to Houston Police Department investigators, the man was shot in the head and was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition.
Police said Wednesday that Christopher Enrique Torres, 22, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the shooting.
Police said the victim and two suspects -- Torres and an unidentified woman -- were all in the store together before the shooting. They said that Torres and the woman left the store and when they came back, the victim was standing by his car in front of the store.
Investigators said Torres approached the victim and shot him in the head. He then got in a vehicle with the woman and they left the scene. Police said that witnesses helped them track the suspects down and take them into custody.
“Because we were able to get good descriptions and get accurate license plates immediately, we were able to find the suspects while they were still in the vehicle with the firearm that was used in the crime," HPD Commander Ryan Watson said.
It's unclear exactly what led up to the shooting.
