Trial update: Father of accused Santa Fe shooter says he didn't know where gun safe keys were

The defense argued there's no evidence that the accused shooter's parents gave him guns. The judge dropped that part of the lawsuit.

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — The civil trial against the accused gunman in the Santa Fe High School shooting and his parents wrapped for the weekend on Friday afternoon.

Dimitrios Pagourtzis and his parents are being sued over the mass shooting that left 10 people dead and 13 others injured at Santa Fe High School in 2018.

During the trial on Thursday, family members of victims claimed Pagourtzis' parents were negligent for failing to secure the guns used in the shooting.

On Friday, the defense argued the allegations in the lawsuit claiming that his parents gave him guns and asked those allegations to be dropped since they said there's no evidence that's what happened.

The judge agreed.

During testimony, Pagourtizis' father said he didn't know where the keys were to his gun safe. He said it had been months since he had opened it.

In another defense motion, lawyers asked for Santa Fe ISD to be added to the lawsuit as a responsible third party. The judge hasn't yet ruled on that.

The trial will resume Monday with defense witness testimony.
