HOUSTON — A man was injured in a shootout with Houston police officers on the west side of town Saturday morning, HPD said.
This happened on Country Place Drive, which is southwest of where I-10 intersects Beltway 8, around 7:45 a.m.
According to police, a neighbor was walking his dog when he heard two gunshots. He noticed the suspect, a man in his 30s, sitting in a driveway handling a gun. That's when the neighbor went inside and called police.
When officers arrived, they made contact with the man in his garage and noticed he had a gun. The two responding officers reportedly ordered him to drop the weapon, but police said he refused to comply. At one point, the man threatened the officers with the gun and a shootout ensued.
The man was hit multiple times and both officers were uninjured, according to HPD.
Despite being shot, police said the man went inside the home and locked the door.
The officers called for backup and a perimeter was set up around the home. Police were able to make contact with the man's mother, who was inside the home. She told officers that the suspect did suffer gunshot wounds, but did not want to comply or surrender. At some point, she brought the man's gun outside and set it on the ground before going back inside, according to investigators.
She later came back out and officers were able to secure her.
The suspect surrendered to officers after they advanced on the home. After taking him into custody, officers gave him first aid and the man was taken to an area hospital with what police said were non-life-threatening injuries.
Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite said it's unclear whether both responding officers opened fire or just one of them, but multiple rounds were shot. The suspect fired two to three times, he said.
The two officers both have 7 years of experience with HPD and will both be placed on administrative leave while an investigation is underway.
The incident will be investigated by HPD's Homicide Special Investigative Unit as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
The body-worn camera video will be released within 30 days, which is HPD's policy.
Satterwhite said the man will likely face charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer. His mother will not likely face charges.
Neighbors told police the man had been acting more erratically and concerningly in the months leading up to the incident.
