HOUSTON — A 44-year-old man was shot and killed by Houston police officers at a northwest side home on Monday, according to investigators.
The Houston Police Department said it happened on Shadowdale Drive, which is near the intersection of Clay Road and Gessner Road, just inside the Beltway.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said officers with the department's major offenders division were conducting surveillance on the house when they decided to execute a warrant around 4:20 p.m.
Finner said the warrant stemmed from an incident on March 22 in which the suspect pulled a gun at a nearby business and threatened to shoot the manager and set fire to the building.
The officers surrounded the house and announced their presence. When the suspect wouldn't come out of the house, officers got in through the back door.
They found the suspect in a bedroom and ordered him to come out. At first, Finner said the suspect complied, but at some point, he went back inside the bedroom, grabbed a gun and pointed it at officers.
That's when two officers opened fire. The suspect died.
"I'm not going to tell officers to stand by and wait to get shot," Finner said. "They're doing their job. We're just trying to keep the community safe."
Police didn't identify the suspect and also said there wasn't anyone else in the home at the time of the shooting.
