Northside families say shelters making neighborhood unsafe

HOUSTON - The North Houston community is once again on alert after a teenager was stabbed while in line at a fast food restaurant Tuesday night.

HOUSTON - The North Houston community is once again on alert after a teenager was stabbed while in line at a fast food restaurant Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old stabbed at Poppa Burger is reportedly in stable condition. Police say that the suspect, 30-year-old Michael Kenneth Jones, is in jail.

The restaurant is less than half a mile away from where 11-year-old Josue Flores was fatally stabbed last May.

An advocacy group called 'Safe Walk Home Northside' formed to help keep the streets safe after Flores' death. His accused killer was allegedly living at the Salvation Army in the area.

On Wednesday, a group of police officers, parents and city council members asked for change. They say the number of halfway houses and men's shelters is making the neighborhood a dangerous place for families.

The community is also asking that people be vigilant and to keep their eyes open. HPD also has a new bike unit patrolling the streets.
