HUMBLE, Texas — A North Shore High School football player died after being found unresponsive at a party with a gunshot wound Saturday night.
This happened around 11 p.m. on Fieldwick Lane near the Forest Shadows community in Humble, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
This incident started as a welfare check in response to reports of underage drinking at a short-term rental property. Deputies arrived and found 50-60 people inside the property and called for more units.
At the scene, deputies said they were told that a man, now identified by family as 18-year-old Jarvon Coles, was in the backyard of the house having a seizure and they attempted CPR immediately.
While attempting CPR, deputies noticed a gunshot wound to Coles' chest.
EMS arrived and transported Coles to an area hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it appears that the shooter or shooters "intentionally shot" in the direction of the house party from about a block away. He said the suspects left the scene in a vehicle.
Jarvon's grandfather and guardian, Braxton Coles, told KHOU 11 News his grandson was a two-time first-team all-district linebacker at North Shore High School.
He said Jarvon had a 4.1 GPA and was accepted into 15 colleges. He also said Jarvon had just visited Lamar University and was planning to go there to play football.
Braxton said Jarvon was with him Friday night and later left to "hang out with a couple of buddies." That was the last time Braxton saw his grandson.
Jarvon leaves behind his grandparents and several brothers. Braxton has a message to parents he wanted KHOU 11 News to share.
"Parents, please keep your kids close. No matter how hard you try, you can't save them," Braxton Coles said.
One of Jarvon's teammates and fellow senior, DaMeko Williams, said he woke up to the news and started crying.
"Jarvon was a great human being, he was a great person, always had a smile on his face, never see him getting into anything bad, or having any type of conflict with anyone," he said.
Williams said Coles got along with everyone and was always checking to make sure his friends were doing well.
"He was like I say, a great person on and off the field, he was very smart," he said.
Friends are now left with memories of Jarvon, off and on the field.
"It was great, I wouldn't trade it for the world, he was a very great player," Williams said.
One of Jarvon's coaches posted a statement to X saying in part, "You cannot measure the impact he had on and off the field in our program. Truly an incredible human being. Prayers needed for his family, our student athletes, our staff and the entire North Shore community."
The sheriff's office said the scene was secured and partygoers were interviewed by homicide investigators. Investigators are still looking for any doorbell camera or surveillance video of the suspect/suspects.
