HPD: Armed man shot by officers in north Houston

Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said the man initially walked away from officers but when they caught up, he had a gun in his hand and the officers opened fire.

HOUSTON — A man is expected to survive after being shot by officers in north Houston on Thursday night.

Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said the incident started around 8:20 p.m. when they got a call about a man with a gun walking in and out of traffic along Cavalcade near the Eastex Freeway.

When officers got there, they engaged the man, but he walked away from them. When officers approached him again, he pulled out a gun. Diaz said it's not clear if the man fired any shots, but officers did open fire.

Diaz said the man then ran into the woods. They were able to find him and take him into custody.

He had been shot one time in the upper torso, according to Diaz. He's expected to live.

When he was taken into custody, a gun was found in the man's waistband.
