Police take gunfire while investigating what they said was fake kidnapping call

Police said a man shot twice at officers who were responding to an apparent fake kidnapping call early Friday morning.

HOUSTON — A man opened fire on officers who were responding to a call about a kidnapping early Friday morning in southwest Houston, police say.

This happened around 3 a.m. at a home on Paiter Street, which is in a community off S Post Oak Road between Beltway 8 and FM 2234.

Police said officers had gotten a call from a woman regarding an alleged kidnapping at the home. Officers knocked on the front door and when they got no response, went to the side of the house. That's when HPD said a man opened a side door and shot at least twice toward the officers. No officers were hit.

The officers retreated and formed a perimeter. HPD said they were able to get all three occupants of the house out safely, including the gunman. In addition to the gunman, HPD said there were two elderly residents in the home. No one was hurt

"While we were investigating the original matter, had it ended there, we would've probably made a police report, continue to try to follow up with that anonymous female caller," said Lt. Riley with HPD. "However, based on the suspect's actions, he went a little further. But we do obviously want to make sure that there are no people inside the home that have been kidnapped or in danger."

It's unclear what charges, if any, the man will face.
