HPD officer heard on bodycam praying during Lakewood Church shootout

A female officer who responded to the active shooter in Lakewood Church was praying as she approached the shooter. Then she prayed over the boy who was shot.

HOUSTON — The Houston Police Department released multiple bodycam videos Monday of the moments during and after the Lakewood Church shooting that left the shooter, Genesse Moreno, dead and her young son critically wounded.

In one video, you see Moreno and her son enter the church. She was wearing a trench coat to hide her AR-style rifle.  According to police, Moreno tried to get into the sanctuary, but it was locked.

In another video, a female officer's bodycam showed courage and humanity in the face of horror. Officer Garcia with HPD was standing in a hallway talking with other law enforcement officers when they suddenly heard what sounded like gunshots.

"Why are people running?" Garcia asked.

Then, as she and other officers ran toward the gunfire,  you could hear Garcia pray," Father God... Father God, just be with us."

In a chaotic scene, frightened churchgoers ran away from the gunshots as law enforcement moved toward it.

"We need to go," Garcia said.

She then briefly took cover and called for backup. "We're at Lakewood Church. We need units now."

Even as Garcia got closer to the shooter, she didn't hesitate. And she kept praying.

"We need to go. We need to get closer. Father God. God," Garcia said.

"We need to go. Come on," she told another female officer. "He's probably coming. Careful. Let's approach. We've got to approach, come on."

"Dude," the other officer replies.

"Come on. Come on. We need to approach. Father God, just be with us. Forgive us our sins," Garcia prayed.

'Please bring him close to you'

As she rounded a corner, she was told the shooter was down. She then knelt beside Moreno's 7-year-old son who was unconscious with a bullet wound to his head. Garcia prayed over the little boy and tried to comfort him.

“Father God, please bring him close to you," Garcia said. "You're good, you're good, you're good, it's OK."

Katherine Schweit, who created the FBI's Active Shooter Program, reacted to the officer's courage in the face of danger.

"It was gripping to listen to the officer asking God to guide them, knowing she needed to move closer as fast as she can," Schweit said. "The frightening part, the reality you see in that footage, she doesn't know what she's going to face."

Samuel Moreno survived but he remains hospitalized after multiple surgeries. The boy's grandmother and Moreno's former mother-in-law, Walli Carranza, said over the weekend that Samuel is now breathing on his own. On Monday, she posted that he had smiled. But Carranza said doctors have been very transparent about his long-term prognosis and they say "Sam will never be Sam again."

It's still not clear whether the boy was shot by officers or by his mother, according to HPD, and the investigation continues.

Moreno, who attended Lakewood in the past, was taken down by off-duty HPD officer C. Moreno and off-duty TABC agent Adrian Herrera, who were working extra jobs at the church. She had a criminal background and documented mental health history but was still able to legally buy the AR-style weapon used in the shooting.
