HOUSTON — A video of Pastor Jorge Basave has been making its rounds across social media since the Lakewood Church shooting.
Pastor Basave was doing a pre-show livestream inside the church, welcoming people and letting them know about the upcoming Spanish service, when all of a sudden he heard what we now know was gunshots.
“Pensé que algo se iba callado pero cuando escuche...," Pastor Basave said
He said he thought something fell, but when he heard the continuation of that sound, he knew it was a weapon.
He said people that were in the area, which they refer to as the drop-off, were running for their lives.
“Gritando… traen un arma automática,” Pastor Basave said.
He said a lot of people were yelling, saying the shooter had an automatic weapon.
Pastor Basave remained calm. He said getting people to safety was top of mind for him.
“Me lleve bastante gente al tercer piso," Pastor Basave said.
He said he took a lot of people to the third floor -- to private rooms, and his services didn't stop just because the service did.
“Tender a le gente cuidar a le gente,” he said.
Overall, he's glad that the situation didn't escalate and that the families who were separated were united.
He's hoping, through all of this, people can hold on tight to their faith.
"Aunque hay tormentas aunque situaciones no controladas pero hay un ancla."
He said although there are storms and situations that we can’t control, there’s an anchor
Pastor Jorge Basave has been a pastor for 21 years. For the last 6, he's been at Lakewood Church. He plans to be back at Lakewood this Sunday like he is every week.
