Three shot outside Katy Mills mall, police say

According to the Katy Police Department, three people were shot outside Katy Mills on Saturday.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Three people were injured Saturday night in a shooting outside Katy Mills mall, according to the Katy Police Department.

Police Chief Noe Diaz said it appeared to be a drive-by shooting outside of Entrance 5 around 9 p.m.

The three people were taken to an area hospital for treatment and are expected to be OK. Diaz said one of the victims ran through the mall and was treated near the Bass Pro Shops by a first responder. The people involved are between the ages of 14 and 17.

The chief said six juveniles were detained for questioning. He said the suspects were detained in a nearby parking lot and the vehicle used in the shooting was reportedly stolen out of Houston.

A witness said she and her son were leaving the mall around the time it was closing when she heard the shots ring out. She said when they went outside, they saw one person who appeared to have been shot in the lower leg.

Katy Mills issued the following statement to KHOU 11 Sunday morning:

"The safety and security of our shoppers, retailers and employees is our highest priority. We have an elevated police and security presence at the property and are grateful for their quick response last night to this isolated incident."

At this point, we don't know the motive for the shooting.
