KATY, Texas A former Morton Ranch High School history teacher and boys interim basketball coach has been arrested and charged with improper relationship with a student.
Katy Independent School District officials said the investigation began with an anonymous text message sent to an administrator on May 15. The message alleged a sexual relationship between Daimon Sweet, 44, and a 17-year-old student.
When police officers interviewed the teenage girl and Sweet, both denied the affair. Officers then obtained the rights to search the girl s cell phone and she admitted that the affair happened, police said. The teenager said the sexual relationship started on Jan. 14, 2014 and that the two would meet at the Palace Inn. Police said Sweet and the teenager also exchanged text messages and nude photos.
Sweet resigned from Katy ISD on May 19. Katy ISDpolice arrested him on June 4 and he was charged with felony improper relationship.
Providing a safe and secure learning environment is our top priority, and we will continue to do everything we can to ensure the safety of our students, Katy ISD officials said in a news release.
Sweet, a former Notre Dame basketball player who also briefly played for the Dallas Mavericks, remained in the Harris County Jail Thursday with his bond set at $30,000.
When classes out early Thursday at Morton Ranch High School KHOU 11 News heard some kids shouting, Free Coach Sweet.
Students at Morton Ranch High School said the teacher s popularity on campus caused problems for the alleged victim.
The girl who was with him came to school today and she was chased out by a lot of the students, because they didn t like what she did, said Javon Alexander-Bradford.
The girl s mother confirmed that her daughter was involved in an altercation on campus.
Alexander-Bradford said he thinks the girl is being unfairly targeted.
It s not just her fault, he said.
Many parents put the blame squarely on the other side.
I think it s a shame. I don t know what s going on with the teachers, said Louise Henderson, a grandparent of a Morton Ranch student.
