HOUSTON -- A jury has started deliberating in the case of a Spring High School student charged with murder in the stabbing death of a classmate inside the school last year.
Investigators said Luis Alfaro stabbed 17-year-old Joshua Broussard eight times after a fight broke out near the school's cafeteria.
The defense and prosecution told their different stories of how that happened in closing arguments Thursday.
Prosecutors say the now-18-year-old Alfaro admitted he had a knife with him and that he pulled it out and started slashing.
They said he was a gang member who came to school that day planning to seek revenge for his friends being beaten up the day before.
Prosecutors said text messages show Alfaro was looking for revenge, and that after the murder, he was covered in Broussard's blood.
The defense argued Alfaro is the wrong guy. They said in surveillance video showing the fight, Alfaro and Broussard aren't together long enough for Alfaro to stab the victim eight times.
In the video Broussard stumbles off with his shirt stained with blood. He died inside the school shortly after.
Three other students were also injured in the attack. The jury heard from them and the victim's family throughout the trial.
