HOUSTON — The man accused of hitting and killing a woman at a bus stop while leading police on a chase on Wednesday faced a judge for the first time on Thursday evening.
Joseph Jebbia is facing four charges, three of which stemming from the chase this week. He's also facing an aggravated kidnapping charge from another incident.
The judge set Jebbia's total bond at $350,000 -- $150,000 on the murder charge, $100,000 on the kidnapping charge and $50,000 each for the unlawful possession of armor and unlawful possession of a firearm charges.
Around 2:15 p.m. Thursday, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said deputies and US Marshals tried to stop Jebbia at a gas station in north Houston. They said he was wanted on a felony warrant out of Montgomery County.
When they tried to take him into custody, he sped away and led them on what turned out to be a deadly high-speed chase through the northside.
At one point, he ran a red light and hit a vehicle. Police say he then ran into a woman who was waiting at a bus stop along the North Freeway feeder road near West Road. That woman was identified as 61-year-old Carrie Mitchell.
Authorities said that after Jebbia hit and killed her, he kept going until he was stopped by law enforcement authorities near the Tomball Parkway -- about 10 minutes away.
They said Jebbia surrendered and was taken into custody there. When authorities searched his red Tahoe, they said they found about a kilogram of fentanyl, body armor and a loaded rifle.
