HPD: Innocent bystander killed when man tried to hit girlfriend with car outside nightclub

Houston police said the incident started with a fight between a man and either his wife or girlfriend in a nightclub.

HOUSTON — A man has been arrested after police say he hit and killed an innocent bystander while trying to run over a woman believed to either be his girlfriend or wife outside a nightclub early Sunday morning in Houston's Midtown.

This happened around 3 a.m. on San Jacinto Street near the Gulf Freeway.

Houston police said officers were patrolling in the area when they heard what they believed to be gunshots. When they got to the scene, they instead discovered a woman had been hit by a car. Witnesses told police the suspect drove off. He was later detained several blocks away on Jefferson Street.

According to HPD, this incident started as some type of domestic violence altercation in a nightclub. When the man and his partner were kicked out of the club, he got into his car and started driving, crashing into several other vehicles before attempting to drive into the woman he was with. She was able to get out of the way, but an innocent bystander was hit and killed.

Police said the innocent bystander was a manager at a club who was getting ready to go home.

The case is being investigated by HPD's Vehicular Crimes and Homicide divisions. HPD said a murder charge is being considered.
