Father left paralyzed after being shot in neck on his way home from work on I-10

Toby Anderson was left paralyzed after being shot in the neck while driving home on I-10 near Mason Road last month and investigators still don't know what happened.

HOUSTON — “He was ... he is the absolute best man that I have ever known,” Senetra Jones said about her fiancé, Toby Anderson.

Tears and prayers have become a daily occurrence for Jones and their 3-year-old daughter, Llydi.

“He did absolutely anything that he could to make sure that me and Llydi always had a smile on our faces no matter what that took,” Jones said.

Anderson is fighting for his life inside a Houston hospital.

“I don't understand why anybody would want to shoot him,” Jones said.

According to Jones, on Saturday, May 25, just like every night, Anderson started his drive home from work just before midnight.

But the loving and proud "girl dad" never made it home.

“Something’s not right, something is not right. I have to figure it out,” Jones said she was thinking when he didn't show up.

After countless missed calls and text messages, she finally got an answer but it wasn't Anderson on the other end of the phone. Instead, a nurse told Jones and her family to get to the hospital immediately. At the hospital, a doctor told the family about his condition.

“He was, like, 'He got Life-Flighted in Level 1 trauma with a gunshot wound to the right side of his neck. He is paralyzed from the neck down. He's on a ventilator," Jones said the doctor told her.

Anderson was shot while he was eastbound on I-10 near the Mason Road exit. Now, more than two weeks later, as Anderson dips in and out of consciousness, Jones told KHOU 11 News that the shooting investigation has stalled.

“No leads, no video, no witnesses. They don't know what to call it. He said it could be a case of mistaken identity, could be he was caught in the crossfire, it could be road rage,” Jones said.

Now, with no one else to turn to, Jones is reaching out to her fellow Houstonians hoping and praying that someone will find the courage to come forward.

“If you saw anything, please, we are begging, anybody, please come forward. Please call the police. None of us in this family can accept that nobody saw anything. We cannot because somebody saw something,” Jones said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Harris County Sheriff's Office at 713-274-9100.
