Man found shot to death in apartment elevator in Greater Third Ward, HPD says

Security guards told officers they saw two men who appeared to be armed running away.

HOUSTON — A man in his 20s was found shot to death Tuesday in an apartment complex's elevator near the University of Houston.

This happened at the complex on Elgin Street between Scott Street and Cullen Boulevard at around 11:30 p.m. Because the apartment complex is so close to multiple universities, many students live there and said they are now scared.

"I was heading down to go to my car so I could head out," one student said. "I saw the body in the elevator."

According to the Houston Police Department, apartment security guards heard several shots fired before a resident on the 17th floor called an elevator and found the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The security guards told officers they saw two men who appeared to be armed running away.

Soon after, police said they got a call about two men who had been shot at a gas station a block away.

"We don't know if it was a robbery. We don't know if it was gang-related," said Lt. R. Willkins with HPD. "We don't exactly know what occurred, but two individuals left this location who may be also shot."

It's unclear if the two scenes are related, but detectives said the two men at the gas station were taken to a hospital.

Students who live at the apartment complex said it's easy to gain access to the building. They said the garage door is always open and sometimes the key fob that gets you access to the complex doesn't work.

"I think they should have security at all times of the day,"  one student said. "Anything can honestly happen."

They hope management does more to help make everyone feel safe.

"For most of us, it’s our finals week," a student said. "Most of us have finals today and tomorrow and it's very shocking and mindboggling to believe that this could actually happen in a  building that is supposed to be high-rise student luxury housing."

The person killed inside the elevator has not been identified by the medical examiner's office.

Investigators don't know if he is a victim or a possible suspect, but they are hoping anyone with information calls HPD.

KHOU 11 reached out to the apartment complex for a response but has yet to hear back.
