Man accused of killing girlfriend in north Harris County found dead of self-inflicted gunshot wound

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said Richard Mitchell, 51, shot Ashley Davis, 33, and escaped with their toddler. He brought the child back and took off again.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A man shot his girlfriend to death at their apartment in north Harris County late Thursday night before taking off with their 1-year-old child, according to the sheriff's office. Officials said the man returned to the apartment and dropped the child off before taking off again.

It happened around 11:40 p.m. on Red Oak Drive in the Bammel area near the North Freeway.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said the couple's neighbors reported hearing gunshots before finding the woman in the apartment. 

She was later identified as 33-year-old Ashley Davis. 

On Friday, Houston police found Richard Mitchell, 51, dead in his vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The 1-year-old child is reportedly safe in the custody of family.
