HOUSTON — A man was shot in the foot when police said a group of armed men tried to rob his family at gunpoint while they were unloading groceries in southwest Houston Friday night. Shortly before this, the family's neighbor was shot in the back while trying to pull into his driveway.
This happened on Shadow Crest Street in the Braeburn Glen neighborhood, which is near South Gessner Road and the Southwest Freeway shortly before 11 p.m.
Lt. Wilkens with the Houston Police Department said the family had just gotten home from grocery shopping when two or three masked men armed with a rifle and pistol came up to them from the side of their yard and held them at gunpoint. Wilkens said the father was shot in the foot but started to fight the masked men when they tried to force the family inside the home.
"I’m scared. I had a bag with all my papers and they took that. They were asking for money," a family member of the man shot in the foot told KHOU 11 News.
The family said when the suspects tried to force their way into the house they actually stuck a gun into the father's stomach, but he managed to push it down and that’s how he ended up shot in the foot.
"They did not get inside because her father got to the door and locked it," the family member said.
The men ran off when one of them shot a round into the home's door, according to HPD.
Just before this incident, Wilkens said the family's 21-year-old neighbor had been shot in the back while trying to pull into his driveway with his girlfriend. According to HPD, a black sedan was blocking his driveway, forcing him to park behind the car. That's when he noticed some people hiding in bushes nearby.
Sensing something was wrong, Wilkens said the neighbor tried to speed off, sideswiping the black sedan. While taking off, one of the men shot into the car, hitting the neighbor in the back. His girlfriend managed to drive him to an area hospital, where he's in critical condition.
