'Road rage is real' | Houston man shot during freeway merger left with a bullet in his side

He says someone in a pickup truck shot him once and his car three times as they jockeyed for a lane along the West Loop.

HOUSTON, Texas — Under a bandage on his side is a bullet wound a man in Houston is thankful to have survived.

The man, who only wanted to be identified as 'DJ,' wanted to keep his identity hidden because the person who shot him remains at large.

"I felt blood rushing down my back,” he said.

He was shot once and his car was hit at least three times around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The bullet that remains inside of him first went through the door and center console.

"It’ll do more harm having to go in there and search for the bullet than, you know, just leaving it in there,” said DJ.

DJ pulled over to get help after a suspected road rage incident that happened where I-59 meets I-610 North. He said he and a pick-up truck driver jockeyed for a lane while merging.

“I jumped back in front of him because the lane was ending,” said DJ.

He said he never heard gunfire, but quickly realized he and his car had been hit.

“I read about it, like, all the time," said DJ.  "But I didn’t ever think I would be a, you know what I’m saying, like a victim of getting shot.”

Houston police said his incident came just hours after they responded to another shooting likely prompted by road rage.

It's something DJ said he will always try to steer clear of in the future.

"Hey, road rage is real," said DJ.  "Just let them pass you, man, like, let them cut you off.”

Houston Police shared some advice regarding road rage.

“The first thing we ask is people just take a deep breath," said Senior Officer Josephine Jones. "Don’t take yourself too seriously, don’t take others driving too seriously."

"We never know who’s in the car, what those people are going through.”

Jones said engaging a potential threat is the last thing to do.

Just take notes of what kind of vehicle the person was in and report it, if appropriate.

"At the end of the day, we want you to get home to your family safe," said Jones.
