HOUSTON — Family members have identified the teenager killed in a chase that ended in a crash early Saturday morning in north Harris County.
His name is Stephaun Fair, 15, according to his mother. He was a sophomore at Klein High School.
“He’s gone because of someone else’s negative decision," Naomi Fair, Stephaun's mother said.
Stephaun was riding in the backseat when the teenage driver of the vehicle he was in led police on a chase.
This happened shortly before 1 a.m. when two officers saw a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu speeding on Kuykendahl Road near Rankin Road.
Houston police said the officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver took off and at one point turned the car's headlights off to lose them. Police said during the chase, the Malibu hit speeds of 80 to 85 mph.
The chase ended when the Malibu attempted to pass a Toyota Camry on Veterans Memorial Drive, but the driver hit the Camry, causing the Malibu to spin out and strike another vehicle on the other side of the street.
There were four teenagers inside the Malibu, including the driver. Stephaun was the only one who died as a result of the crash. The others had to be taken to a nearby hospital for their injuries as well as another driver involved in the crash.
Naomi said she didn't even know her son wasn't home until she got a knock on her door at 5 a.m.
“I told the officer my son ain’t dead, my son in his room so I went up there and he wasn’t in his room," Naomi said.
His family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for his funeral arrangements.
The teen driving the Malibu was charged with felony murder and evading in a motor vehicle.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office is investigating this crash. HPD said they are also conducting an internal investigation into the crash.
