'No remorse for human life' | Victims of alleged funeral scam speak out

Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen said the suspects allegedly forged signatures to claim thousands of dollars in life insurance money.

HOUSTON — An 8-month long investigation by Harris County Constable Precinct 1 led to the arrests of two people who allegedly ran a funeral business without a license.

Jevon Major and Sandy Broussard have been charged with forgery after being accused of conspiring to obtain life insurance funds from the dead. They allegedly forged the signatures of the beneficiaries, stealing thousands of dollars.

"This is a case that absolutely turns my stomach," Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen said during a press conference Friday. "It turns my stomach because you're dealing with people at the most vulnerable time of their lives. After they lost somebody they loved and cared for."

According to Rosen, Major acted as a funeral director and would get people to send him money and insurance policy information.

One victim said Major forged her father's name and maxed out his life insurance policy. She said he also filled out a crime victim's form to get additional money.

Another victim said Major mishandled her son's body. She said the body was "smushed" inside the casket and warm.

Another victim had a similar story, claiming Major told her to come see her son's body at a church after 9 p.m. She said the body was bloated and had an odor.

Some victims said their loved ones' bodies are missing.

Investigators believe there are plenty more victims out there. If you believe you are one of them, call investigators at 713-755-5200.
