HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A 24-year-old Alvin man is accused of shooting and killing a convicted sex offender in Houston in May 2023, according to court documents.
According to court documents, James Lewis Spencer III, 24, is charged with murder stemming from the shooting death of Sean Connery Showers, 37, on May 29, 2023.
Spencer went before a Harris County judge on Thursday morning who set his bond at $250,000. He was arrested on Jan. 31.
According to court records, Spencer told a witness he knew how to track sex offenders via an app on his phone and that he wanted to rob and hurt them. He later reportedly told that witness that if the police weren't going to do anything, he'd take matters into his own hands.
During Thursday's probable cause court hearing, the judge said that cellphone records showed that Spencer and the victim had been in contact. Court records indicate Spencer posed as a minor and discussed the victim's sexual history with minors before agreeing to meet up with him.
The phone records reportedly tracked Spencer traveling to and from where the shooting happened.
Some of Spencer's bond conditions include 24-hour house arrest, GPS monitoring, and having no access to firearms, ammunition, or weapons. As of Friday morning, he had not made bond.
His next court date is scheduled for Feb. 5.
