HOUSTON — A SWAT team was called to a home on Houston’s east side Tuesday after someone barricaded themselves inside, police said.
It started around 6:30 a.m. when someone called police to a home on Kress Street near Market about a family disturbance that involved a man with a gun, police said.
When officers arrived at the home they "made contact" with two teenagers who had hidden in a bedroom inside the house. Police said the teens reported that the man made threatening comments and they saw him with the gun. They said the man was known to have guns and that he was on "some sort of substance," the teens told police. The teenagers escaped through a window and made it to safety.
After the teens were safely out, SWAT was called in around 8 a.m. and officers continued communicating with the man who eventually came out of the house holding a gun, police said. The man went back inside and officers got him to come out again. At some point, at least one shot was fired and officers fired back at least once. No one was injured.
A KHOU 11 photographer saw the suspect throwing what appeared to be money at the officers as they tried to get him to surrender.
Just before 9:30 a.m., the man was taken into custody.
It is unknown what led to the disturbance or why the man had a gun.
Charges of assault on a peace officer are expected, HPD said.
