HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — KHOU 11 obtained new surveillance video of a drive-by shooting that the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said left an innocent man dead.
The shooting happened at a convenience store on Thursday night along Ella Boulevard near Barren Springs Drive. It’s one of several deadly shootings in that area this year alone.
Outside of the Shop and Save are candles, balloons, cards, and other tributes to a man who was killed this week.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, identified by deputies as 69-year-old Ernest Brooks, was not the intended target.
“There were other individuals exiting the store at the time, we believe those were probably the targets,” Sgt. Jason Brown with HCSO said.
At least 30 evidence markers could be seen on the street while deputies were on the scene.
“Quite a number of shots fired, multiple shell casings were fired from the road,” Sgt. Brown.
Investigators believe multiple shooters were involved. Surveillance video from the convenience store shows the vehicle driving by before it opens fire on the store. It’s not an isolated incident of gun violence.
On October 3, a man was killed in a drive-by shooting at another gas station across the street. The gas station is where the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said two men were killed after an ambush-style attack in January involving three men with assault rifles.
“Something’s been going on in this neighborhood for a long time, there’s a large amount of gang activity, drug-related gang activity, a large number of robberies, shootings,” Sgt. Brown said. It's not clear if the shootings are related to each other, but it’s likely causing concern for the community.
Anyone with information on the latest shooting is asked to call the Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers of Houston.
