HOUSTON — Houston police say a suspect who was wanted in connection with a police chase earlier this month has been taken into custody after a confrontation with officers Wednesday morning.
The original chase in northeast Houston had to be called off because the man was driving too erratically, according to HPD.
Police said investigators located the car at an apartment complex on Lansdale Drive near the Sam Houston Parkway in southwest Houston Wednesday morning.
They got a warrant to seize the vehicle and confronted the driver, who had his 5-year-old daughter in the car.
Officers allowed the man to take his daughter. Instead, HPD said he suddenly reached back to get into the car. There was a struggle and as he got back out of the car, the man reportedly knocked a sergeant to the ground, prompting another officer to open fire. HPD said the officers believed the man was armed at this time.
He took off and ran through the apartment complex and jumped several fences to get into another complex about a mile away, where he's accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint and taking her phone. Officers were able to locate and take him into custody.
According to HPD, no one was hurt in the incident.
Police said officers found narcotics and a semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine in the car. Officers were not able to locate the gun the man allegedly used to rob the woman. If any residents locate the gun, they're asked to contact police.
The man's daughter was still near the car when the shooting happened, but police said she was unharmed.
The man is in his 30s and police said he has a lengthy criminal history. His name hasn't been released yet.
According to HPD, the officer who shot at the suspect is in her 40s and has served with HPD for 23 years. The sergeant who was knocked to the ground is in his 30s and has 16 years of law enforcement experience.
Both will be placed on administrative leave as multiple investigations play out.
The case is being investigated by HPD's homicide special investigations unit, robbery and internal affairs, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
The body camera footage will be released within 30 days, according to HPD policy.
