During a briefing on the incident, Police Chief Troy Finner said Valle kept his composure and directed his fellow officers away from danger.

"He was directing them, hey keep cover, the suspect ran that way, keep cover, you I need you to get a tourniquet on me," Finner said.

Valle was struck multiple times in both arms and legs but was able to return fire, killing the suspect. His bullet-proof vest also stopped multiple bullets.

The sergeant was treated at Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center and was released Wednesday.
