Suspect wanted after Good Samaritan killed in hit-and-run, HPD says

A 33-year-old man was killed after he apparently broke up a fight near a gas station on Veteran's Memorial Dr. and W. Gulf Bank Road. The driver left the scene.

HOUSTON — Houston police are searching for a suspect involved in a deadly hit-and-run on the city’s northside Tuesday.

It happened around 5:20 a.m. near a gas station at Veteran’s Memorial Drive and W. Gulf Bank Road.

Police are sharing cell phone video of the incident and surveillance photos with hopes of finding the suspect.

According to HPD, they claim a Good Samaritan lost his life.

“He was doing the right thing. He was preventing a fight and lost his life over it,” HPD Homicide Detective Alexander Vinogradov told KHOU 11 News.

Police said a man in his 50s wearing a white shirt and blue shorts was caught on camera running over a 33-year-old victim with what’s described as a 2003 gray Chevy Silverado, with the license plate TDY9548.

According to the witness's cell phone video, the two men were involved in an altercation of some kind. HPD said there was a fight between at least three groups of males.

On cell phone video, you can see the suspect get into his truck and put it in gear. You can hear witnesses yell moments before impact.

“Watch out,” a bystander yelled.

The driver ran over the victim and nearly hit another man before leaving the scene. Police said the victim was well-known in the area.

“In talking with the clerk he’s a very nice kid. He’s an adult but [the clerk] calls him a kid, very calm, very polite, hangs out in the area but causes no problems,” Detective Vinogradov said.

Anyone who has seen the suspect or has information about the case is asked to call Houston police.
