HOUSTON — The windshields of nine Houston Police Department patrol cars were smashed by large rocks and bricks under the I-59 overpass near the George R. Brown Convention Center, HPD said.
According to Houston police, this happened Thursday morning. HPD's Major Offenders Division is investigating. We don't yet know who damaged the cars or why.
If you have any information on the incident, you're asked to contact HPD at 713-308-3100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
A window repair crew was spotted at the scene Friday working to fix the damage. However, as of Friday evening, three of the damaged HPD units still had broken windshields.
Houston Police Officers' Union president Doug Griffith told KHOU 11 that police were already short on patrol vehicles.
"We have limited equipment, we have limited cars, and to see someone go out there purposely damage our equipment like that, it really detracts from us being able to respond to calls for service." he said. "We need to apprehend whoever did this so it doesn't happen again."
