HOUSTON — A Houston mother is facing two charges of injury to a child after she's accused of assaulting her 4-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son at their apartment, according to court documents.
Markita Chante Phearse, 29, is accused of hitting her daughter in the back of the head multiple times, as well as grabbing her chest and shaking her. She is also accused of hitting her son in the head several times.
During an investigation, the children told officers they had been left home alone and didn't have anything to eat or drink for two days, court documents read. Additionally, the son told investigators he had never been enrolled in school.
While investigators were at the scene, the woman reportedly yelled at the children to not say anything.
The documents said the children were taken to an area hospital for treatment where a nurse noted there appeared to be a burn on the 4-year-old girl.
At the apartment, investigators noted there were holes in the walls, water on the floor, and trash was scattered about.
Phearse appeared in court late Tuesday night. Her bond was set at $15,000 per charge for a total of $30,000. She's due back in court in February.
Should she make bond, a judge ordered that Phearse not have any contact with her children. She must also comply with any Texas Department of Family Services order. The judge also ordered she take a parenting class within a month.
