HPD: 2 shot in apartment break-in in Houston's Fourth Ward

Police said a man was shot in the upper body and a woman was shot in the leg.

HOUSTON — Houston police are searching for several suspects after two people were shot during an apartment break-in early Thursday morning.

This happened shortly after midnight on West Dallas Street near Gillette Street.

Witnesses told HPD that three to four men hopped the gate to an apartment's patio and smashed a window. Shortly after, those witnesses heard two gunshots. At some point, two more people reportedly jumped the gate into the apartment.

HPD said a man was shot in the upper part of his body and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. It's unclear whether he will survive. A woman was also shot in the leg and is expected to be OK.

During the commotion, police said a group of people locked themselves in one of the bedrooms. The suspects reportedly tried to break the door down but were unsuccessful and took off shortly after.

Investigators were working to gather witness statements at the scene. Police said the man who was shot was friends with the apartment's owner, who was not home at the time.
