Hundreds show up to vigil for pregnant Heights woman allegedly strangled by husband

Hundreds of people made their way to Marmion Park off Heights Boulevard with lit candles to pay their respects to Christa Gilley.

HOUSTON — Hundreds of people showed up Tuesday night at a park in the Heights to remember Christa Gilley.

Christa Gilley was allegedly pregnant when investigators said she was killed by her husband, Lee Gilley, last week.

A KHOU 11 News crew was asked to stay outside of the vigil but it was clear from a distance that Christa's death is still on the minds of many in the Heights.

From across the street, hundreds could be seen making their way to Marmion Park off Heights Boulevard with lit candles. They joined in prayer for the mother who police said was killed by the man who was supposed to love her most.

Lee Gilley is still in the Harris County Jail. He's facing a capital murder charge. He's expected to have a bond hearing on Thursday.

On Oct. 7, prosecutors said Lee Gilley strangled Christa at their home on Allston Street. They said she was nine weeks pregnant at the time.

Investigators said Lee Gilley called 911 and claimed his wife had overdosed on pills and killed herself. He said he gave her CPR.

The medical examiner's office concluded that Christa had injuries consistent with strangulation.

The couple's other children are staying with family members.

On Monday, an attorney for Christa Gilley's family sent KHOU 11 the following statement:

"Christa's family is devastated by her tragic death and the death of her unborn child. Christa was an amazing mother, full of love, and excited to welcome her third child. They were taken from this world needlessly and way too early. Christa's family appreciates the outpouring from the community and hopes for justice for their daughter and their unborn grandchild. They are here to support Christa's children and to focus on the memory of their daughter."
