Cockfighting ring bust in north Harris County: Landowner denies wrongdoing

Authorities said dozens of people ran away during the bust on Sunday. The landowner, however, was arrested and charged.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A north Harris County man was arrested after authorities said he was running an illegal cockfighting ring.

Constable Alan Rosen said the landowner was arrested on Sunday.

The ring was busted at a home along Millsite Road after someone called in a tip. The property is near where E Mt Houston Road turns into North Lake Houston Parkway.

Rosen said Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies found more than 100 roosters on the property. They said eight were dead and razor blades were found.

According to Rosen, the landowner is claiming he's innocent.

"He claims he was just allowing his land to be used for cockfighting and he would profit by way of whatever gambling was going on out there -- he’d get a percentage of it, is what we're being told by him," Rosen said.

The landowner was charged with a Class B misdemeanor.

Rosen said 20 to 30 people ran away when deputies got there. The ones who were caught were given citations.
