HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A woman’s estranged husband faces a capital murder charge after deputies say he shot and killed a friend of hers on Monday, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
The sheriff said Kerry Cunningham is now charged in connection with the shooting death of Clifton Lee Johnson, 38.
According to Gonzalez, it happened at an apartment complex on Cypress Plaza Parkway near the intersection of Tuckerton Road and Fry Road.
The sheriff said the woman had moved to an apartment to get away from Cunningham. While she was in her apartment with Johnson, Cunningham reportedly showed up and began kicking in the door and using a screwdriver to open it.
After Cunningham broke into the apartment, he found the friend hiding and an argument ensued, the sheriff said. That's when the husband allegedly shot Johnson.
The sheriff said Johnson was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.
According to Gonzalez, Cunningham remained at the scene and was arrested.
