HOUSTON According to the Houston Police Department, at about 3:10 a.m. Sunday Sgt. Dwayne Polk, who was wearing his deputy s uniform, was driving his personal vehicle west on Little York when he was struck and killed by a drunken driver.
As Polk crossed the intersection with North Shepherd, his Chevy pickup was struck on the driver s side by a white GMC truck, police said.
The driver of the GMC, was traveling at a high rate of speed and ran a red light when he hit the deputy s Silverado, police said. There were no skid marks to indicate he even attempted to stop.
Polk was pronounced dead at the scene inside his truck, police said.
The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Anders Munos-Munos, was suspected of being drunk and taken to Ben Taub Hospital where a mandatory blood draw was done, police said.
This is not the first time Munos-Munos has been charged with driving under the influence, police said. He was arrested on June 10, 2012 for driving while intoxicated. He also was charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon.
Officials said that Polk was a 16-year veteran with the sheriff s office.
