GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas — A Galveston County jury on Wednesday sentenced a man to 99 years in prison for killing his girlfriend in 2023 in Crystal Beach, according to the District Attorney's Office.
Raymond Bernard Bordern Jr., of Galveston, was also sentenced to 10 years in prison for driving while intoxicated for the third time or more.
The Galveston County District Attorney's Office said the investigation started when a woman flagged down Galveston County Sheriff's Office deputies to report a hit-and-run crash in the early morning hours of May 21, 2023. Deputies were able to track down the driver who fled the crash and identified him as Borden.
That's when Borden was charged with DWI 3rd or more. After the DWI investigation, deputies discovered a woman's purse and wallet in the truck, which the DA's Office said was registered to Tina Kelley.
Five days later, a welfare check was conducted on Kelley at the request of her daughter. Deputies found her dead in her home with several gunshot wounds.
Further investigation found that Borden had a spent shell casing in his pants pocket and Kelley's blood on his shoes when he was booked for his DWI arrest. The DA's Office said the murder weapon was also found when Borden was arrested on the DWI charge.
The DA's Office said Borden pled guilty to the charges and he was sentenced on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
Evidence from the trial showed that Borden's blood-alcohol concentration was three times the legal limit when he was arrested. He testified that he had been a daily drinker for years and could not remember what happened the night of the shooting.
Deliberations lasted less than an hour before the jury returned the sentence.
