GALVESTON — Two Galveston bartenders have been arrested for allegedly over-serving a woman who allegedly struck two bicyclists, killing one of them. The other cyclist suffered several broken bones and other injuries.
Gerilyn Weberlein, 50, was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault after the June 4 incident.
Five cyclists were heading toward the seawall on a dark stretch of 69th Street when the two victims were struck.
Before it happened, police say Weberlein had been drinking for several hours at the Pier Club in the 1700 block of Avenue O.
They obtained surveillance video that showed her spilling drinks, losing her balance and needing other customers to assist her to keep from falling.
The video showed she left the bar 15 minutes before the deadly crash.
Shafay Look, 34, and Jon Ward, 56, were the bartenders who served Weberlein, according to police.
They were arrested and charged with selling an alcoholic beverage to an intoxicated person.
The misdemeanor offense carries a fine of up to $500 and up to a year in jail.
The victim who died was identified as 23-year-old Marco Antonio.
He was in the lifeguard academy for the Galveston Beach Patrol, according to Chief Peter Davis.
