Armando Batista received a 99-year sentence for killing Albert Titov in January 2023. The trial began Tuesday and a jury returned a guilty verdict on Wednesday afternoon. The jury delivered the sentence on Thursday.

The killing

On Jan. 17, 2023, Titov, 73, was stabbed in the back six times while he was fishing along Boddeker Road, a popular spot to fish in Galveston.

A week after the deadly stabbing, an eyewitness came forward and gave investigators a video of the incident. The jury saw the video that showed Batista loitering near Titov while Titov was fishing. Batista then suddenly stabbed Titov six times in his back.

The eyewitness testified that Batista and Titov got into an argument earlier in the day, but it wasn't physical. The witness said Batista went to his vehicle and came back with a knife and a face covering before the deadly attack.

Titov and his family had moved to Texas from Ukraine, police said.
