HPD: Fireworks set off in crowd at end of rally for Palestine in downtown Houston

More than 2,000 people gathered at Houston's City Hall Saturday for a peaceful demonstration to express their support for Palestine, said Houston police.

HOUSTON — A man was given a ticket Saturday for setting off fireworks at the end of a rally for Palestine in downtown Houston, police say.

More than 2,000 people gathered at Houston's City Hall for a peaceful demonstration to express their support for Palestine, said Houston police. At the end of the rally, fireworks were set off in the crowd, police said.

Two people were initially detained for the incident, but one man was later released. The second was cited for a Class C misdemeanor of detonating fireworks within the city limits, police said.

"HPD appreciates the cooperation of today's organizers and remains committed to ensuring everyone can gather safely while exercising their freedom of speech rights," the Houston Police Department said in a statement released on X, formerly known as Twitter. "We will continue to pray for peace in the region and for the families who have lost loved ones."

KHOU 11 reporter Deevon Rahming was at the rally and will have a live report on what happened on KHOU 11 News at 10 p.m.
