HOUSTON — Two men are injured after a carjacking led to a shootout on the East Loop Friday night, according to the Houston Police Department.
HPD said this all started around 6:45 p.m. on Martin Luther King Boulevard near West Bellfort Avenue in Southeast Houston.
Investigators said the carjacking victim had gotten into another car with another and went after the stolen vehicle by tracking his phone, which was still in the vehicle. They managed to catch up with the stolen car on the East Loop near Clinton and managed to get it to stop on the main lanes. That's when HPD said a shootout ensued.
Two men were hurt in the shooting. One was grazed on the cheek and the other was shot in the lower body. They both showed up at area hospitals and are expected to be OK. HPD said they believe one of the hurt men was involved in chasing the stolen car down and the other was involved in stealing the car.
The person whose car was stolen was not hurt and returned to the original scene of the carjacking, where HPD said officers discovered narcotics on him. HPD believes he was involved in the shootout.
Police said there was a third car at the shooting scene that took off after the shootout. They said they believed that car was involved in chasing down the stolen car.
The incident is being investigated by HPD's Robbery Division, who will determine what charges should be filed and who should be charged.
"It's a big mess right now, but investigators are working on it," said Lt. Riley with the HPD.
