HOUSTON — Police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot to death at a northwest Houston apartment complex Saturday afternoon.
It happened at the Golden Bamboo Village Apartments on Mills Road near Highway 249 and Willowbrook Mall.
Houston police said around 2 p.m., a man, possibly in his 30s, was outside in a parking lot when another man, possibly in his 20s or 30s, came up to him and started conversing. Police aren't sure what they were discussing or if any argument occurred.
"We're not really sure at this point in time whether it was some sort of consensual meet-up between these two parties, of if there was something else going on. That's still an ongoing investigation as to why that took place," Houston Police Homicide detective Michael Barrow said.
Witnesses then heard gunshots and saw the suspect leave the scene on foot. One witness told KHOU 11 News they heard five to six gunshots.
Bobby Johnson lives at the apartment complex and said he heard the gunshots, too. Johnson, who works as a nurse tech, said he jumped into action to try and save the victim's life.
"I was trying to talk to him, but I was checking his pulse and all of that, but he was already gone," Johnson said. "I'm very scared, because I couldn't believe that I was trying to help him, and he died. He just died right in front of me. It's devastating."
Johnson said he was surprised such a violent incident happened at the place he has called home for more than a decade.
"We've never, ever had that here, ever. I've been here, like I said, since 2013, and we've never had anything happen here ever," Johnson said. "I can't believe somebody shot a person, a human being, and it's very, very, very, very difficult. I'm shook beyond words."
It is unknown if the suspect lived at the apartment complex. However, family members of the victim told KHOU 11 News at the scene that their loved one did not live at the apartments.
Anyone with any information about the shooting or the whereabouts of the suspect is asked to call Houston police or Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS.
