KATY, Texas — A Port Arthur man is being held with no bond after being charged with capital murder in connection with the deadly shooting that happened at a birthday party in the Katy area in January.
Three people were killed in the shooting -- Michael Odobo, 24, Nicholas King, 24, and Ellesha Rice, 24.
Jaylon McIntyre has been charged in connection with King and Rice's deaths. As of now, no one has been charged in Odobo's death, but KHOU 11 learned Friday that McIntyre is the only suspect being investigated.
"All three victims are tied to this defendant," said Prosecutor Jamie Burro. "It's just for a matter of charging, you only have to allege two."
What happened
On January 21, a birthday party was held at a short-term rental property on Russet Leaf Trace in the Katy area.
McIntyre, who was at the party, allegedly pointed a gun with a laser at a woman and took her phone, prosecutors said. When McIntyre tried to grab her, prosecutors said she ran downstairs for help. That's when McIntyre allegedly shot and killed a man he knew who was trying to calm him down before turning the gun on everyone else at the party, prosecutors said.
"There are reports that they could see the green laser from the gun sweeping the downstairs and there were more shots that followed," Burro said. "Once the shooting started, people were taking cover downstairs trying to get out of the house."
Odobo, King and Rice were shot and killed in what Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez called a "very chaotic" scene.
"These are three people who went over there for a fun night out, and now their families are going to miss them forever," Burro said.
McIntyre was shot in the forearm, possibly by people who managed to escape and fired from the outside.
His next court date is scheduled for April 17.
