HOUSTON — Two people are dead, and two others were seriously injured after a short chase ended in a fiery rollover crash early Tuesday, according to the Houston Police Department.
This happened just after 2:30 a.m. on Long Drive near Lancaster Street just east of Telephone Road.
Houston police said officers tried to pull over a driver for running a red light on Broadway and almost hitting another car but the driver refused to stop.
Surveillance video obtained by KHOU 11 News showed the car speeding before the driver slammed into a barrier on Long Drive and rolled over as the vehicle burst into flames.
Police said they weren't sure how fast the car was going, but it was definitely over the speed limit.
Four males were in the car and one passenger died at the scene. The other three were taken to a hospital where another passenger was pronounced dead.
The driver and a third passenger were in critical condition. Police said they appeared to be pretty young.
Investigators found evidence in the car that pointed to possible criminal activity, HPD said.
"With the burglary tools and a bag that one of the suspects had over their shoulder that contained what we thought was a pistol, however, it ended up being a BB gun and they also had two screwdrivers inside the bag," HPD Asst. Chief Adrian Rodgriguez said. "We believe they were involved in some type of criminal activity."
The driver could face felony evading charges.
